Starting a business today costs less than a weekend at Coachella.
The hard (and more expensive) part is what comes after that.
The reason so many businesses fail is because people have forgotten how to build businesses that are actually profitable. Anyone can have a big idea and launch a new product or service. Few can scale. So, what’s the secret?
Creating a lean business with a clear road to profitability.
How do you overcome common challenges to create and scale such a business? Here’s how 👇
Challenge 1: Build More Than An Idea
As entrepreneurs, having big ideas is our specialty. But in a sea of new businesses all trying to be the special, shiny thing, you’ve gotta stand out.
Don’t rely on your flashy big idea alone.
Build on the momentum of your idea by making sure it can hold its own as a real, profitable business. Validate it early using tools like SEO keyword research and market analysis with tools like: SEMrush & Ahrefs. (Links) This helps you understand demand, evaluate competition, and clarify whether your idea has lasting potential.
🗺️ Mapping out what the future looks like can help you save time and resources by deciphering the duds from the big deals.
Challenge 2: Take Yourself Seriously
If you don’t take your own business seriously, how do you expect others to?
Make SMART goals, identify your revenue streams, and integrate regular reporting tools. Establishing these processes will help set your business up for success and make customers (and investors) take your business seriously.
SMART goals are:
Specific - What exactly are you trying to achieve?
Measurable - How will you know when you’ve achieved it?
Achievable - Is it genuinely possible to achieve it?
Relevant - Does it contribute to your company’s growth?
Time-Based - When do you want to achieve this by?
Challenge 3: Be Honest About Profitability
Sure, ambitious revenue goals can be inspirational. But are you being realistic?
No one expects your business to be profitable on day one. In fact, it’s a rite of passage for every business founder.
🗝️ The key here is making sure that you’ve got a plan to scale revenue and constantly build on your success. When you make your first $100k, what will you do? Even if you’re not there yet, having realistic plans in place will help you keep your eye on the prize.
Challenge 4: Always Be Pitching
While having clear plans to achieve profitability is vital, you should also be ready for luck to hit.
Luck does happen in business. For example, you end up at an event talking with a key VC in your vertical. But you have to be prepared for those moments by:
Having your 30-second pitch perfected. How would you tell me about your business in one sentence?
Knowing your numbers. What are your most recent profit margins? How can you explain your profitability (or plans for profitability)?
Doing your research. Who in your industry is someone you need to know? You could lose out on an opportunity just by not knowing who’s sitting next to you.

Final Thought
🚀 Scaling a business successfully is more than just having a big, flashy idea, it’s about preparation, honesty, and real action toward realistic profitability.
